I am taking advantage of World Handwashing Day (October 15, 2020) to highlight an innovation in the Rum sector. : the production of hydro-alcoholic gel or solution from rum following the covid 19 pandemic.
During this pandemic, the most appropriate gestures are washing your hands with soap and water, but when you are away from home, it is more delicate. Hence the use of hydroalcoholic gel or solution (only for the hands).
The importance of correct hand hygiene and the use of disinfectant products therefore imply a significant quantity of alcohol from distilleries (especially for us in this blog) in the rum sector following the call for help from health personnel. Indeed, the lack of disinfectant products has triggered an international and united movement. And the initiative of rum producers has made it possible to manufacture hydroalcoholic gel or solution.
The production of alcohol for the hydroalcoholic gel is done from distillation waste, with a high alcohol concentration of around 70-80%, i.e. around 70% ethyl alcohol and around 80% isopropyl alcohol. These are so-called potable alcohols. Undrinkable alcohol is generally used as fuel. 
This waste is either discarded or reused in other processes such as the production of fuel alcohol and other products such as alcohol gel. Or sold to pharmaceutical laboratories (liquid alcohol or other derived products). Of course, the exceptional regulatory measures have been adopted with the aim of simplifying and accelerating the procedures for the production, packaging, labelling, transport and marketing of hydroalcoholic gel. However, it requires authorization and regulation to produce and market it (distribution). In addition, as part of the fight against the spread of the coronavirus, the Minister of Solidarity and Health has issued an order authorizing the preparation of hydro-alcoholic solutions in community pharmacies and pharmacies for indoor use (PUI), until May 31, 2020. The representatives of the profession welcome this decision which will make it possible to respond to strong demand from the population and the internal needs of health and medico-social establishments, to participate in the limitation of the risk of infection linked to the transmission of the covid-19 virus. http://www.ordre.pharmacien.fr/
